It’s April Fools plus two birthdays!

Quarantine Birthdays suck.

My adventurous little cousin Tina turns 34 today and I can’t even bake her a cake. The stores were totally cleared out of cake mix before the lockdown started. There’s no flour, yeast or eggs anywhere. Epic prepper fail. I should have planned better, but hey it’s my first pandemic.

Marty found a can of enchilada sauce in the back of the cabinet, so we used the last tortillas to make QuaranTina a special lunch. Instead of plating them up all pretty with a side of beans and Spanish rice, we had to wrap them in foil and plastic to leave on her doorstep. Not the warmest delivery. Hopefully the remaining primas will chear Tina up with their birthday car parade.

The day’s second born day belongs to a bit of yeast.

Sister Lucette’s first portrait

I was researching yeast alternatives on my favorite lady blog, Jezebel. They had a neat Beer Bread recipe, but I can’t see us sacrificing a whole beer every time we want to make dough. So then I stumbled upon Sourdough and it’s magical Sourdough Starter.

Sourdough Starter is a little bit of fermented dough that can be used to leaven a variety of baked goods. I found mine for free on Next Door. It’s customary to give your yeasty friend a name, so I named mine Sister Lucette after my Jr High Science teacher. She was a funny little nun who opened up the world for me and I loved her dearly.

So let’s see what this little lady delivers. I’m excited!
