We have Gabriel Figueroa skies today.

This cinema master defined the look of the Mexican Golden Age. His dramatic skies and enviable cloud porn were achieved with a polarizing red lens filter. The man’s depth of field was nothing short of magical.

Gaze upon Figueroa’s visual witchery…

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (The Academy) are pleased to present Under the Mexican Sky: Gabriel Figueroa—Art and Film. Pictured: Gabriel Figueroa, scene from the film La perla, directed by Emilio Fernandez, 1945.

Inspired by such cinematic poetry, how could I not capture our own Southern California skies?

Alta California was once a part of Mexico. The similarity of landscape, climate and people in Orange County to those “South of the Border” are a testament to our Mexi-Indigenous heritage.

I had to pick up some Zinc lozenges in Anaheim, so took advantage of the drive to shoot Hillcrest Park in Fullerton, and some iconic spots in Santa Ana.

Hopefully these pretty pictures will ease some cabin fever. After a week of quarantine, it felt exhilarating to drive outside. Can’t wait until this whole thing is over and we embark on another road trip.
