First exhibiting our video art together for the Vigo international film festival in Spain. The show was put together by Latino film scholar and former UCLA Chicano Research Center director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tft.ucla.edu\/2011\/09\/faculty-chon-noriega\/\">Chon Noriega<\/a>. It was sometime in the early to mid-90&#8217;s, after I&#8217;d already returned to the U.S. after years attending art school in Madrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"GUILLERMO GOMEZ-PENA; WELCOME TO THE THIRD WORLD; LA POCHA NOSTRA\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EdEF3Sg-5w4?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Guillermo was a part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/artforsocialchangetoolkit.wordpress.com\/history\/the-border-art-workshoptaller-de-arte-fronterizo\/\">Border Arts Workshop<\/a> in San Diego, CA. We were both a part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/victorpayan.com\/saveourcentro\/\">Centro Cultural de La Raza<\/a> community and the performance art world that orbited <a href=\"https:\/\/eastvillageproject.com\/sushi-performance-visual-art\/\">SUSHI gallery<\/a> in downtown. I attended undergrad at <a href=\"https:\/\/ucsd.edu\/\">UC San Diego<\/a>. It was an era of increased militarization around the US\/Mexico border. I consider GGP a mentor and cherished source of inspiration. He jetted in at the last possible hour from his chateau in Mexico City. Most of the time GGP is touring but COVID shut all that down. As you know, I&#8217;m &#8220;Pocha Pe\u00f1a&#8221; and have been using that moniker for several decades.
